Size/Medium : 1219 x 610mm: acrylic on canvas Painting
Dulcie has painted Karlyapilyirra a site close to Pipaar, south of Balgo in the Great Sandy Desert. The orange colours represent different mangarri (bush tucker); like pirriwarr (wattle) and kumpupatja (bush tomato). The brown and red colourig represents the tali, the sandhills and desert sands. The white dots represent the salt lakes of the area.
Dulcie says “You can see it when you’re flyng from above… you can see the colours and the country.”
Central to the artwork is the the necessity of life in the desert – the waterhole. The white swirls indicate the saltpans and the light brown swirls are the clay pans, surrounded by sandhills (red and orange radiating lines) that shift with the seasons. Here, Duclie tells of her country, its heritage and its life giving gifts.
